What better place to start our tour than "back home" in Scott County, in eastern Iowa, near Davenport, in a German community. This barn is no longer being used, but structurally is in excellent condition -- certainly a tribute to the skill of the builder. This barn is more than 100 years old. Most of the Iowa barns were "raised up" in the 18th and 19th century by men of the community -- fathers, sons, and neighbors working together. Barns were put together in sections, some weighing as much as 15,000 pounds. "Barn raisings" were a time of work, but also a festive occasion. The windmill is also becoming obsolete and will soon vanish from the countryside.
